Nine Short Stories by Author – Philosopher – Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky, sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, was a Russian novelist, and writer of short stories, essays, journalism, and a philosopher. Dostoyevsky’s literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual world of 19th-century Russia, and engage a wide variety of realistic philosophical and religious views.

Stories in this collection include:
An Honest Thief in which yhe story opens with the narrator taking on a lodger in his apartment, an old soldier named Astafy Ivanovich.
A Novel in Nine Letters the story of two friends, one of whom borrowed money from the other, and their attempts to meet up and square the debt.
An Unpleasant Predicament also translated as “A Nasty Story“, “A Disgraceful Affair“, as well as “A Most Unfortunate Incident” and “An Unpleasant Predicament“, is a satirical short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky concerning the escapades of a Russian civil servant.
Another Man’s Wife and a Husband under the Bed which is also humorous and reads like a cliché of the vaudeville.
The Heavenly Christmas which evolved from Dostoyevsky’s visit to London, England during 1862 where he observed a poor child.
The Peasant Marey where he recalls an episode in a prison camp that made him remember a still earlier incident from twenty years before.
The Crocodile A true story of how a gentleman of a certain age and of respectable appearance was swallowed alive by the crocodile in the Arcade.
Bobok whose title can be translated from the Russian as meaning “little bean,” and in the context of the story is taken to be synonymous with gibberish or nonsense.
And..
The Dream of a Ridiculous Man which chronicles the experiences of a man who decides that there is nothing of any value in the world. Slipping into nihilism with the “terrible anguish” he is determined to commit suicide. A chance encounter with a young girl, however, begins the man on a journey that re-instills a love for his fellow man.
