The Man In The Picture – by Susan Hill

A Dramatic reading of this haunting tale of love, loss, and our most base fear of existence. A truly gripping tale.

There is a theory that ghost may be projected recordings from the very brickwork of buildings that they may be recorded in ‘stone tapes’ that can replay scenes or characters of heightened emotion that went before. What if something a bit more animated than a building, say a realistic oil painting, could also convey recorded instances of such strong emotions? Emotions such as mortal terror?

Such a painting, regarding a Venetian carnival scene, is hanging in the rooms of a Cambridge Manor.
An old scholar sits by the fire telling his ex-student the ‘strange and somewhat disturbing’ story the painting. In the foreground, a strange figure seems to be in distress. Apparently restrained by two carnival revellers, he looks ‘astonished and afraid.
